Best Eye Cream

EC_hyaluronI have fallen in love with a new eye cream. I have been trying alot of new products lately and the Hyaluronic Eye Cream from Mario Badescu seems to be working. I have been using it morning and night for about three weeks now. I have noticed fine lines have lessened and my eyes are much more hydrated. My concealer stays put and I just love the light feel of it.

It’s $18 which is a great price, considering a lot of drugstore brands are just as much. I ordered it on line from the site, and there was free shipping and they also sent me 3 trial sizes of my choice.

I also read all the reviews on the Mario Basdescu site and on amazon. They were all great with the exception of a couple of people who seemed to have a reaction. It is an aloe based formula and it will keep your eyes hydrated all day. If you have a Nordstrom you can try it there.

If you don’t use an eye cream it is never too late to start. You will be happy to have the eyes of a 40 year old when you are 80.

I just love it, and I think you will too.

Favorite All Around Treatment Product-Kiehl’s

a203288.001

I went to get my hair cut yesterday and my hairdresser asked me what I use on my skin. Now, as an aesthetician I can tell you that I have used many, many brands and although I have a few favorites, there is one product that I adore. It is the Midnight Recovery Concentrate by Kiehl’s.

It comes in a dark blue glass bottle and you only need about 3-4 drops to cover your face. It is lightweight, and absorbs quickly into your skin. I use it alone, but you can also add another moisturizer on top of it. Use what you think your skin needs.

What I like even better is the price. It is $46, compared to many of the other top store brands that go for $75 and up ( LaMer for example). Now I know that is isn’t cheap by any stretch and its a lot of money to shell out. However what I will tell you is that my last bottle almost lasted 9 months.

The pros of the Midnight Recovery Concentrate are these:

  • It is paraben free and naturally derived
  • lightweight
  • quickly absorbs
  • Hydrates and minimizes fine lines
  • Regenerates and restores skin to a healthy balance.
  • Essential oil blend with primrose oil.
  • Best suited for normal to dry skin.

If you have a Kiehl’s store near you or a department store that carries the line, ask for a sample. They give generous sizes and then you get to try before you buy.

What I also told my hairdresser is that it really doesn’t matter what type of moisturizer you use on your skin; I use Purpose with SPF15, its about what you put under it that counts.

Product Review Friday-Garnier Skin Renew B.B Cream

There has been a lot of talk of skin cremes that can do it all-B.B Cream. These face cremes are supposed to give coverage, sun protection, and minimize fine lines and wrinkles at the same time. Too good to be true, right? I decided to try the Garnier Miracle Skin Perfector- B.B. Creme with SPF 15 in Medium Deep.

The consistency is excellent, almost like a mousse but in a cream form. Goes on really smooth, like a silicone, but I will say I feel like my face looks a bit shiny until it sets about 4-5 minutes. I have combination skin, so I feel like I look a bit too greasy, but I throw a bronzer over it and I am fine. What I do like about it, is that its a one stop. My sunscreen and coverage in one product. I would think of it like a tinted moisturizer, with a bit more. I would probably only use it for days that you don’t want to wear foundation, or just heading to the gym or beach and don’t want to be bare faced. My skin feels soft and has a bit of a glow to it. If you are looking to try a product like this, you might love it. I read a lot of reviews on amazon and drugstore.com and they are mixed. The cost is about 10.99-13.00 so try it out, its a cheaper product, but it might just be the product you have been looking for. They do have these B.B Creams at Sephora but the price tag is about $36 and up.

Monthly beauty = Birch Box

This is one of the coolest things that I have come across as an avid product user. It is called Birch Box. It is a program that sends you the latest and greatest samples from top companies and ones that are new. It is a fantastic way to try new things without the commitment. This was my mothers day give to my family. A three month trial. The recipient can then customize their hair and skin type when they receive their first box. Its like a beauty surprise each month. How fun. I have to say that I did order a 3 month trial for myself, I couldn’t resist. It will give me a whole new batch of products to try out.

So weather you want something for yourself of a friend who you know will love this, check it out. I did have to put in a request for purchase, and I heard back in about a week. They give you a 96 hour window to sign up. You can do a 3, 6 or 12 month plan. Genius.

Best Fake Tan-Per-fekt Skin

phpThumb_generated_thumbnailjpg

I have fallen in love with a new product that I stumbled upon in NYC. My mom and I walked in Henry Bendels, totally loving the high energy atmosphere, it’s a product junkies dream. So many products to try, so little time. Well we stopped at a counter with a spunky sales girl, who looked like J.Lo. The line is Per-fekt. I can’t say enough about how cool this line is, however I will just focus on one of the product that I am using now. It is the gel/tan Per-fekt. It is a multitasking product that is an alternative to self tanners and bronzers.

This little miracle product has shea butter, and hyaluronic acid in it, which treats the skin for dryness and tone. I have been using it on my arms and chest area, and applying to my legs as needed until I get some sort of base color. Goes on silky smooth, and the color totally makes me look like I have a tan glow, but natural not orange.  The counter manager said that the tube should last all summer, that is yet to be seen . I will tell you that I was blown away at how great my skin looked and felt. My mom too, was thrilled. Her skin looked fantastic. She ended up walking away with five of their products. I have two others that I am trying and will keep you posted on the results. I do know that this product is sold at Sephora and worth a test drive. I promise you will not be disappointed.

Protect The Skin You Are In

I found this video on a post from Six Sisters.  I was so moved that you need to watch this, and heed the advice. Check yourself and check your spouse and children, only takes 5 minutes.

11 Sun Safety Tips-Best Sunscreen Report

Best Beach & Sport Sunscreens | EWGs 2011 Sunscreen Report | EWGs Skin Deep.

Now that that sunny weather is here, I go into panic to get sunscreen for the kids and myself. I would like to tell you that I have a favorite that I cant live without, but honestly I usually buy whats on sale and what is convenient.

However, now with all the buzz about safety in cosmetics in general, I have become much more concerned about what I am putting on my skin and especially my children’s. Our skin in our largest organ, and it is responsible for alot of functions: protecting us from bacteria, regulating temperature, ridding our body of toxins, protecting us from the sun to name a few.

The majority of sun damage we get is usually done before the age of 18, however it is NEVER too late to start protecting your skin. Anything you can do now to reduce your exposure over the long term is good for your health. When I think how in my teen’s we used baby oil and would sit in the sun for hours makes me cringe. Hey, we thought we looked pretty good, sadly we didn’t have the information that we now have about how damaging the sun can be.

If you are concerned about not getting enough vitamin D, get your levels checked and take a supplement if needed.

So I am going to run down a list here of things you want to consider before you jump into the sun.

1. Plan ahead. Keep sunscreens and hats and sunglasses in multiple places, so you have it when you need it.

2. Always wear sunglasses. They protect your eyes from the UV rays which can cause cataracts when you are old. I wish I knew this when I was younger, as I never wore sunglasses until my 30″s as I thought I looked awful in them.

3. Take Cover. Hang out in the shade, or use a beach umbrella. Make sure you wear a hat.

4. Avoid the sun’s harshest rays. Stay out of the sun from 10-2pm.

5. Choose a broad spectrum sunscreen and reapply often. That means every couple of hours. If you are swimming and in water, it may be more frequent.

5. Choose a sunscreen from an SPF 15-50. You dont need anything higher. Just remember to put it on.

6. Use a separate bug repellant. Don’t get a sunscreen with a bug spray in it. Use two different products.

7. Ingredients matter. Avoid the sunscreen chemical oxybenzone, a synthetic estrogen that penetrates the skin and contaminates the body. Look for active ingredients zinc, titanium, avobenzone or Mexoryl SX. These substances protect skin from harmful UVA radiation and remain on the skin, with little if any penetrating into the body. Also, skip sunscreens with insect repellent – if you need bug spray, buy it separately and apply it first.

8. Test. If you are using a new sunscreen on a child and you are concerned about allergies, always to a test on the inside wrist first. If there is no reaction in 24 hours you are good.

9. Apply generously. You don’t miss some really important areas: toes, neck, ears, top of head, top of nose, lips and chest. These areas can get really burned and application should be done one area at a time, as not to miss any spots.

10. Apply Daily. Use sunscreen even on cloudy days.

11. Apply to your kids before school. So many schools do not have shade in their playgrounds, and many schools do not have a sun policy.

The report from EWG is excellent and you should take some time to look at it and find a sunscreen that you like and one that has a good safety ranking. Besides reducing the number of wrinkles you will have when you are 80, you will also hopefully avoid the more serious consequences of the sun. Even though your makeup may have sunscreen in it you still need something in addition too it. I use the Neutrogena Daily Defense, but for the beach something even heavier. I will be testing a few from the list and will report back in.

If you have a product that you like, please share.

Why is Tom Selleck on My Lip?

tom-selleck-suit-getty

My girlfriend called me last week totally freaking out to tell me that she was Tom Sellecks sister. She said that she noticed two black hairs on her lip and was headed for a wax asap. I think we have all been there, looked in the rear view and gasped. When did those grow? and Why? quick a trip to the pharmacy to get any kind of hair removal that will take care of these pesky things.  There are several factors that contribute to facial hair growth for women:

1. Hirsutism: this is an inherited condition that causes an abundance of hair growth, not just on the face but other parts of the body also. It causes an increase in male hormones, which in turn increases body hair. This condition is treated with medications that slow hair growth, and coupled with permanent hair removal methods.

2. Pregnancy: we have been there, a luscious maine of hair on our heads, but sometimes it also can grow on our face during this time. Again, the hormone shift causes the unwanted facial hair.

3. Medications: sometimes certain steroid medications and especially birth control pills can cause excess facial hair. You can check with your doctor if you feel your facial hair may be due to your medication. If it is your birth control, there are pills that have a low androgen effect.

Face Saver-Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Liquid

We all know that we need to protect our face from the sun, but don’t want to feel weighed down and clog our pores. Many of our beauty products now already contain an SPF 15, but that really isn’t enough protection. My dermatologist recommended this product and I can say that I really like it-Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Liquid Daily Sun Protection SPF 55. I apply my normal moisturizer that does have an SPF 15. but I put a small amount of this over it. I then apply my makeup and I’m ready to go. It smells clean, has a tinge of that sunscreen smell, but is easily spread and disappears quickly. Its sweat proof and waterproof and contains Helioplex which is a broad spectrum UVA/UVB. I also just read that is also comes in an SPF70. Cost is about $11-12. It will be a staple in your makeup case.

A Safe Clean Manicure

images

After working many years in the spa business, I have had the personal experience of ensuring that all our spa services and procedures were done with clean and disposable implements. Nail salons in particular have been in the news over the years with women contracting Hepatitis B from unclean implements, as well as bacterial and fungal infections.

With Spring in the air we want to show our nails and toes with a splash of color, but make sure that your salon/spa are performing a sanitary and clean service. Here are my suggestions, as well as industry standards for clean and sanitary nail services.

  1. The nail stations should be cleaned before and after each guest. Be sure that there is either a disposable towel or fresh clean towel covering the table surface. Manicure bowls should be clean.
  2. The nail technician should wash their hands with an antibacterial soap or use a hand disinfectant before starting to work on you.
  3. All nail implements: clippers, nippers and cuticle pushers should be in a EPA-registered hospital grade disinfectant solution, or sterilized. If you are not sure that they are clean, ask, or better yet, invest in your own set that you can bring along. To keep your own implements clean, use soap and water and wipe down with alcohol.
  4. A new, clean nail file and buffer should be used. These items can’t be sanitized, therefore you should bring your own. You can also request that a new file be used on you.
  5. Pedicure spa baths need to be cleaned between each guest with a bleach or EPA-registered hospital grade disinfectant  solution. The tub needs to be filled and soaked with the solution for at least 10 minutes, then rinsed and dried.
  6. The same rules apply for the pedicure implements, they need to be sanitized and clean.
  7. Bring your own flip-flops if you remember, unless you are being given a new pair of disposable slippers and toe separators. Those items are single use and should be disposed of between clients.
  8. Lastly, if you have your own polish, you may want to use it also.
Each state has their own regulations for sanitizing nail salons, they are all very similar. If you want to know what your own states regulations click HERE.

Use your own judgement, if your nail salon is clean and the implements are well cared for and sanitized you are on the right track. If you have any broken skin wait until it is healed.  If there are real obvious signs of things not being sanitary, speak up or find another place to go. Your nails and body will thank you.
